This program is sponsored by the Counseling Education department in the College of Education and Professional Studies in conjunction with the Canadian non-profit organization, Operation Groundswell. This experience is for 1 independent study credit given by UW-W faculty.

The "Social Service-Learning" program is an intensive exploration of Guatemala's western highlands through the lens of culture, education, gender and health. Journing from the colonial jewel of Antigua to the volcanic slopes of Lago Atitlan, our group will examine the foundations of local cultures and meet the many faces of modern Guatemala. We will connect with local businesses, cooperatives and non-governmental organizations. as well as collaborate on social and community development initiatives that are actively responding to Guatemala's major social service needs. The combination of hands-on projects, cultural immersion and adventure will provide a living classroom in which students can study issues surrounding rural development, educational advancement, child and family health promotion and gender empowerment. The experience will also be a time fo rus to reflect on the connections between tourism, volunteerism, global citizenship and community development.
