Studying at the University of Jyväskylä offers students an exciting opportunity to take course across curriculum in English while experiencing the world renown Finnish education system.

The University of Jyväskylä campus is located in beautiful Jyväskylä, Finland, or better known around the world as “The City of Lights”.  Jyväskylä is a vibrant city filled with rich tradition and Finnish culture. 


The University of Jyväskylä offers a wide variety of coursework, and is internationally recognized as one of the top 400 universities in the world.  Jyväskylä makes their education a global experience with professors from all over the world, and students representing over 100 countries. 

No prior knowledge of Finnish is required, as a wide range of courses are taught in English.  For students studying during the fall semester, Jyväskylä does offer a free Finnish course prior to the semester. Complete course information can be found in their online course catalog.


Exchange students are guaranteed accommodation through student housing or housing providers contracted through the university.  Students will apply for housing through the online application process.  Students will then sent a housing offer 1-2 months before the accommodation is needed.  For more information on accommodation, click here.


Student Life and Surroundings

Exchange students at the University of will be provided many opportunities for success beginning with being given a student tutor.  The Finnish school system also offers ample support for academic success. 

Jyväskylä is a vibrant city of 130,000 placed along majestic Lake Jyväskylä.  Located in south-central Finland, Jyväskylä allows students short travel to the capital city of Helsinki, and to Europe.

Finland is a great location for students who enjoy playing sports, or enjoying the outdoors.  Although it may be famous for its winter activities, Jyväskylä provides outdoor entertainment all year round.

Cost of Attendance, Financial Aid, and Scholarships

Exchange programs are affordable study abroad options that allow students to pay UW-W tuition while studying abroad.  As with all approved study abroad programs, UW-W financial aid can be used on this program.  Eligible students are encouraged to apply for the Wisconsin Grant for Study Abroad, and UW-W and external study abroad scholarships are available.

UW-W tuition, as well as the Global Experiences Application Fee and CISI international insurance, are billed to the student’s UW-W account.  Other expenses are paid individually (e.g. living expenses) or to the host university (e.g. accommodation).

Passport and Visa Requirements

Students will need a passport to study abroad that is valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of their program.  Students must also apply for a residence permit to study in Finland for periods of over 90 days.  This process must be completed in person at a Finnish embassy or consulate.  Please contact the CGE for further information.
