Studying at Umeå University offers students a unique opportunity to take courses across the curriculum in English while experiencing Scandinavian culture and an international campus and environment.
The campus and city of Umeå create a vibrant and welcoming environment for exchange students, with a wide range of opportunities to form connections with Swedish and international peers and experience Swedish and European culture.
Academics
Umeå University is internationally renowned for its academic excellence: major world university rankings place Umeå among the top 400 universities in the world, and students and faculty hail from all corners of the globe. Umeå offers a wide variety of courses in English, and the international student body brings global perspectives into the classroom.
Students of all majors are eligible to participate in this exchange. Umeå offers courses in English in Biology, Business, Chemistry, IT/Computer Science, Economics, Education, History, Math/Statistics, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and Swedish. Complete course information can be found in their
online course catalog.
No prior knowledge of Swedish is required, as a wide range of courses are taught in English, but Umeå offers non-credit and for-credit Swedish language courses for interested students.
Accommodation
Exchange students are guaranteed student housing through the International Housing Office. The International Housing Office offers furnished single-occupancy rooms, most with private bathrooms, in student corridors made up of Swedish and international students. A student corridor is usually comprised of 6-10 single-occupancy rooms which are spread along a corridor with a kitchen and a common room. Students may choose to prepare their meals in shared kitchens or purchase meals in cafeterias around campus. Accommodation offerings are typically within walking distance of campus. For full information about housing at Umeå, visit the Umeå
International Housing Office webpage.
Student Life and Surroundings
The campus and city of Umeå create a vibrant and welcoming environment for exchange students. Living in the student corridors and participating in the Buddy Program allow exchange students to form connections with both Swedish and international students. The International Office and other student services around the university are committed to supporting international students, leading to high levels of student satisfaction. The campus’s state-of-the-art sports and fitness center, IKSU, houses a wide range of facilities, including a climbing wall, indoor beach volleyball courts, and ski rentals. IKSU is the largest fitness facility in Europe and a popular gathering place for students.
With a population of 80,000 and growing, Umeå is the largest and fastest-growing city in northern Sweden. Its large student population of over 30,000 makes it a vibrant university town, and as the upcoming European Capital of Culture in 2014, Umeå is home to a variety of museums, film and music festivals, and professional sports teams, such as soccer and ice hockey. The city of Umeå is easily navigable on foot, second-hand bicycle, or public transportation. Umeå is connected to Stockholm, as well as the rest of Europe, by reasonably-priced flights as well as bus and train networks, allowing students to explore elsewhere in Sweden and Europe during their time abroad.
Cost of Attendance, Financial Aid, and Scholarships
Exchange programs are affordable study abroad options that allow students to pay UW-W tuition while studying abroad. As with all approved study abroad programs, UW-W financial aid can be used on this program. Eligible students are encouraged to apply for the Wisconsin Grant for Study Abroad, and UW-W and external study abroad scholarships are available.
UW-W tuition, as well as the Global Experiences Application Fee and CISI international insurance, are billed to the student’s UW-W account. Other expenses are paid individually (e.g. living expenses) or to the host university (e.g. accommodation).
