Ecuador has it all: from snow-capped volcanoes to long sandy beaches; from bustling cities to rural communities; from indigenous tradition to modern convenience; from incredible natural riches to extreme poverty and inequality; from the Amazon Rainforest to the Galápagos Islands; you name it, this country has it. In other words, Ecuador is the ideal classroom; the perfect destination for students with a true interest in seeing and learning about the world.
Espiritu Santo University offers both short-term programs (Summer) and full semester programs (Spring and Fall), which combine the best practices of study abroad with the experience of studying at an Ecuadorian university, giving students the best of both worlds.
Academics
A wide range of subjects at UEES are taught in English, enabling international students that do not have a high proficiency in Spanish to keep on track with their majors while also working on their language skills. While the largest selection of courses in English are in the areas of Business, Finance and Marketing, there is sufficient choice to enable students of most disciplines to take a full-time load for a semester or academic year.
Students in the Semester in Ecuador Program have the opportunity to learn, practice and perfect their Spanish language skills during their time at UEES. They offer six levels of Spanish language instruction, and two content focused levels of for those with advanced skills. Students are placed in the appropriate course according to their demonstrated level.
Students who demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in Spanish may enroll in the Spanish language curriculum, including courses in Communication, Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Business an Economics, Tourism, and Computer Science/IT, and biological sciences.
Accommodation
Students in the program are able to choose between a home-stay and university residences, though the university strongly suggests that international students choose a home-stay experience.
All home-stays include a private room, three meals a day, as well as light laundry. All of the host families are vetted, regularly supervised, and live close to the university campus. A home-stay is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn or improve Spanish language skills as well as learn about Ecuadorian culture. Living with a host family also provides students with a “home away from home.”
University residence spaces are limited and reserved exclusively for female students. Some single rooms are available but most are double occupancy. The university residences are fully furnished houses with in-home cooking and laundry facilities.
Student Life and Surroundings
Straddling the Equator on the northwest coast of South America, Ecuador is characterized by an incredible cultural and geographic diversity that takes in the Galápagos Islands, the coastal areas of the Pacific, the Andean Mountains, and the headwaters of the Amazon River.
Ecuador has been named as one of the world's few “Mega-Diverse” countries by the United Nations' World Conservation Monitoring.
Cost of Attendance, Financial Aid, and Scholarships
Exchange programs are affordable study abroad options that allow students to pay UW-W tuition while studying abroad. As with all approved study abroad programs, UW-W financial aid can be used on this program. Eligible students are encouraged to apply for the Wisconsin Grant for Study Abroad, and UW-W and external study abroad scholarships are available.
UW-W tuition, as well as the Global Experiences Application Fee and CISI international insurance, are billed to the student’s UW-W account. Other expenses are paid individually (e.g. living expenses) or to the host university (e.g. accommodation).
