Abat Oliba is a new exchange program offered by UW-Whitewater. Added in 2015, Abat Oliba gives students the opportunity to study in the metropolitan city of Barcelona, Spain. Located on the waters of the Mediterranean sea, Barcelona offers students a great balance of big city life and European charm.
Academics
Founded in 2003, Abat Oliba CEU University ranks 1st among Catalan, private universities and is regarded as the 3rd best university in Spain for conducting academic research.
The university is focused on creating a community in the full sense of the word. They endeavor to produce professionals with excellent academic criteria who strive to work for the common good. Abat Oliba CEU University not only provides students with a strong academic base, but also gives them a foundation that prepares them for professional and personal challenges in the future.
Students of all majors are eligible to participate in this exchange, but most class offerings in English center around communication, journalism, and business. In addition, Abat Oliba offers beginning Catalan and Spanish language courses at a variety of levels as well as content courses taught in either language.
Accommodation
Student Life and Surroundings
Barcelona is Spain's second largest city with 1.6 million residents. Located on the Mediterranean, Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, an autonomous community of Spain. This community has two official languages - Spanish and Catalan. Residents of this region of Spain enjoy a mild, Mediterranean climate which includes humid winters and warm, dry summers.
The city of Barcelona is a hot spot for tourism as the city boasts many artistic and historical sites. Students can tour 9 different UNESCO world heritage sites such as: Park Guell, Palau Guell, Casa Mila, Casa Vicens, La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo, and the Crypt of the Church at Colonia Guell.
Abat Oliba CEU Universtiy is located in the upper area of Barcelona, a district that provides quiet spaces where students can go to study or relax. Students are also able to learn about the culture and lifestyle in Barcelona with the resources provided by The Barcelona Centre Universitari (BCU). This service also provides information on accommodation for foreign students.
Cost of Attendance, Financial Aid, and Scholarships
Exchange programs are affordable study abroad options that allow students to pay UW-W tuition while studying abroad. As with all approved study abroad programs, UW-W financial aid can be used on this program. Eligible students are encouraged to apply for the Wisconsin Grant for Study Abroad, and UW-W and external study abroad scholarships are available.
UW-W tuition, as well as the Global Experiences Application Fee and CISI international insurance, are billed to the student’s UW-W account. Other expenses are paid individually (e.g. living expenses) or to the host university (e.g. accommodation).
