Program Description:

Origins of Democracy: Politics, Culture & Society in Greece

UW-Whitewater Faculty-Led Course; Spring 2027; WOMENST/POLISCI 491; 3 credits

Open to all majors

This course provides students with an opportunity to consider democratic practices of government from historical and comparative perspectives, exploring key democratic principles, functions, and forms in ancient and modern Greece. Focusing on the origins of democracy in ancient Greece as our main case study, students will consider the political, cultural, and social context in which democracy emerged in the 5th century BCE. We will examine both the benefits and challenges of Athenian democracy, paying close attention to the status of women, enslaved people, and non-citizens in politics and society. We will explore practices of popular sovereignty, civic responsibility and participation, the rule of law, citizenship, voting, and more. We will also explore parliamentary representative democracy and the politics of modern Greece as a jumping-off point for a concluding, comparative discussion of democratization and anti-democratization/authoritarian processes across the globe. A portion of the class will be conducted in the United States, with the remaining portions taught in Athens, Greece, and surrounding areas.
